How gift cards fit into online checkout.

An overview of retailer gift card fields, payment-card fields and order records. These examples describe a merchant checkout; this blog is a place to read about them.

Read the card instructions before filling anything in

Check which website accepts the card and whether online purchases are supported. An electronic delivery email is not, by itself, a sign that the card belongs in a retailer's gift card field.

  • A retailer card normally follows that retailer's gift card or account-redemption process.
  • A network gift card generally follows the merchant's payment-card process, subject to the card's restrictions.
  • A voucher or promotional code follows its stated redemption instructions.

The card basics article explains these product types in more detail. Payment details belong only in the merchant's actual checkout.

Apply a retailer gift card

  1. Find the matching section.

Look for the retailer's gift card option. A promotional discount box may be a separate feature.

  2. Enter the requested card details.

The retailer may request a gift card number, redemption code or PIN. Follow its own field labels.

  3. Review the updated order.

Check that the gift card value has actually been applied. If a balance remains due, confirm which additional methods the merchant allows.

Do not assume a card was applied just because the field accepted the code. Read the payment breakdown before placing the order.

Use the payment-card fields

Follow your issuer's online-use instructions. Payment-card fields may ask for the card number, expiry date and security code. If address registration is required, complete it through the issuer's verified service first and use the corresponding details at checkout.

Make sure the amount requested fits within the available balance. An online checkout that accepts a retailer gift card plus another payment may still be unable to split a purchase between two network cards.

For product-specific questions, the issuer's original instructions and customer support are the relevant sources. The card basics article explains how to identify that provider.

Check one cause at a time

Order total
Include tax, delivery and any other checkout charges when comparing the order with the available balance.
Card information
Check the field choice and the details against the issuer's instructions. Avoid repeatedly resubmitting the same failed order.
Transaction eligibility
Ask whether the card supports this merchant, country and purchase type. A network logo does not guarantee every transaction is eligible.
Order and balance disagree
Check the merchant's order history and the issuer's transaction record. Ask whether an entry is pending or completed, and who needs to act next.

If support is needed, keep the time, amount, merchant name and error message. Send payment credentials only through the provider's verified secure process, never to this website.

Keep the card until the purchase is settled

Save the order confirmation and receipt. Retain the gift card or original digital message while a return, cancellation or refund is possible; the merchant may send a refund back to the original payment method.

If you cancel an order, ask the merchant and issuer how the payment will be handled. A cancellation confirmation and an updated available balance do not necessarily arrive at the same time.
